Souper Bowl of Caring-Community Service

It happens the day before the Super Bowl. It is a community effort that begins about a week before the Super Bowl.  People in the community drop of food items at locally placed bins in Smith stores.  The day before the big event National guard trucks and several national guard soldiers along with Boy Scouts collect food from smiths donation boxes transporting them to the Granite Education Foundation.  There was over 20,000 pounds of food collected, delivered and sorted yesterday at the Granite education Foundation. Smiths stores, KSL, KUTV advertised for the Souper Bowl of Caring, asking for food donations. See Fight hunger.org to find out more about the origins of the Souper Bowl of Caring.

Community volunteers representing, Village Real Estate, Dominoes Pizza, church youth from SJ First Ward and their leaders, gave their time to help sort and organize the food items in the warehouse which is the old lunch / multipurpose room at Twin Peaks Elementary School. The building is now used for the Granite Education Foundation.  Dominoes brought pizza for everyone as well as their help in sorting the collected food.   I might note that the kids helping were excited to see the food items. Which helped me to realize how receiving children might react.

The food collected from Granite Education Foundation is distributed to children in need at the at area district schools. Weekend packets are available for kids take home and other programs. They currently have 3 food pantry’s set up in the school district. Skyline, Olympus and Cypress High Schools each have a food pantry that students in need have access to for themselves and their families.  There were more food pantry’s but they were hard to keep staffed with volunteers. The food is distributed through the school staffs for now.

The Granite Education Foundation has some other programs in place and other major donors that help keep the Food Packet and Pantry programs available for children and families in need.
